THE TRIAL & MEMORIAL SERVICE: an ooc discussion post

THE TRIAL:

At 3 pm EST, a mock court was held for the drunk driver. The court hearing will be held in the Student Union where a "judge" and "lawyer" will go about trying the drunk driver before they are handcuffed and sent to "jail." The court hearing will be streamed online, through STV, and WXYC. The trial lasted about 20 minutes. The drunk driver was sentenced to 17 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter, though the phrase "capital murder" was thrown into the sentencing.

THE MEMORIAL SERVICE:

A memorial service was held at 5pm in the Smith Center, where the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs spoke about the situation, representatives from the hospital, police department, and a family or person who have been impacted by drunk driving/texting while driving. At some point during the service, the students involved in the demonstration appeared on stage. Some were asked to say a few words, while others sat there and reacted in their own way. Like everything else that had gone on the day before, this was broadcasted on STV, STV's website and on WXYC as well. The service lasted a little over 45 minutes and everyone was dismissed. Characters involved in the situation will be able to go back into their lives and deal with the aftermath of everything.

Please note that all characters involved had the chance to watch reactions of people at the crash, during the vigil and in the hospital, ontop of hearing and seeing their reactions. So if your character was present for any events we would love to read how your characters reacted to this from an ooc standpoint. If they went to see their friends in the hospital or caught a glimpse of someone they hardly knew in the morgue. Did they watch the sentencing? Or were they sitting in the Smith Center (that will presumably be packed) with their sorority sisters or fraternity brothers? We would like to piece together everything so when the characters transition back into their lives, so that we're all on the same page.

Elsa had been at the hospital for the vigil and did the tour, she cried some but tried to stay solid and remember it was just an exercise. She didn't go to the trial but was there at the memorial service and was trying to stay strong. She likely sat with the Zetas, but would have moved around to anyone that needed her, she brought lots of tissues and hugs. Although she appeared with puffy eyes and did cry through some of it, she tried to not appear as shaken as she felt. Elsa is more of a caregiver and would rather hold someone or take someone's hand and take care of someone else than let people care for her.

i think ceahna stayed with elsa during the vigil and the tour yesterday, just because they could have used each other as support. she didn't go to the trial but she definitely went to the memorial as well and stuck close to elsa again and cried a little more and was there to offer support for anyone who might have needed it.

Aly didn't do the tour, because just the mere idea freaked her out- the fact that people she loved had been fatally injured in the crash set her off. She spent her time yesterday at the Delta house, trying to keep it together and trying hard (and failing) in not being mad about how lightly some people were taking everything. She wouldn't go to the trial- but she'll be at the vigil with the Deltas waiting for Riqy and Sol to come home.

Claudia would have been at the Delta house for a good portion of the day with Aly, and probably headed to the memorial with her.

In a last-minute decision, Cam visited the hospital last night and during the tour, she was silent and watchful. She didn't want to talk to anyone and kept mostly to herself. She also visited the morgue where she broke down emotionally, although she was careful to keep her reaction hidden from most. She lingered for a long, long time, reading the autopsy reports and gazing at her "dead" friends before finally calling it a night. Her plane leaves early this morning so she won't be able to attend any of today's events, but she did leave letters for Riqy and Sol in Stevie's care.

Maybe Izzie saw Cam come through the morgue since she was there for most of the night? She'd probably try and talk to her after it since during the fact is off limits.

thursday morning, riqy had breakfast with simon on campus before a reaper came and picked her up. she was pretty excited, and anxious about everything that was going to happen in the demonstration. after she got all bloodied up and they were taken out to the cars, that's when her nerves started to get to her, but she tried to keep her composure. she played the part as the victim, was removed from the car, and placed into the body bag (she'd asked beforehand if the bags had been used before she got in it because she wouldn't have been able to get into the bag if another body was in it before. if she could've, she would've opted to get up and walk to the secluded area, but she had to try to keep things realistic. :/

after the demonstration, riqy had a chance to pull out her laptop and look at all of the statuses on facebook, and seeing some of the other characters' responses really got to her. when she'd signed up, she knew that the purpose was to send a message out to everyone, and they'd been warned in advance of some kind of backlash. so when she saw so many people be sad, pissed off, etc., she began to feel guilty about not being able to tell people in advance. on top of that, she really wanted to sign on or go talk to people and apologize in person or tell them that she was alright.

at the hospital/vigil, riqy wasn't able to talk to anyone since she was posted up in the morgue. i don't know whether or not she'd be able to hear people outside of the room, but if she heard someone crying, she probably shed a tear or two, but did her best to stay still until it was all over.

back at the hotel, riqy was kind of to herself, mostly because she was nervous about any backlash that she, or everyone else involved, would get when this was all over. she tried her best to stay positive and optimistic for everyone, and told them that she'd have their back if anything bad were to go down once this was over. i don't know if they were able to watch the video of everything that happened online, cried a little bit, and did her best to tell herself that she signed up for this for a good cause and that there was no taking anything back at this point.

today, riqy watched the trial online before she had to get ready to go back to the smith center for the memorial service. she did her best to keep it together when the speakers were on stage and made their speeches, and i think she would've gone up to give a small speech. she'd explain the purpose of participating was to spread awareness of drunk driving/texting while driving, say a little bit of how she'd gotten into vehicles with people who'd been high or drunk in the past and that she felt lucky that she and other people hadn't gotten seriously hurt or killed. she'd apologize to anyone who may have been upset about the demonstration, and close things off by reminding people to have fun and be safe during their spring break and in the future.

when the ceremony was all over, if she spotted any of her friends, or people that she knew, she'd go right up to them and apologize for putting them through the whole ordeal without giving them a heads up. she'd personally thank everyone who'd left her some love in her memorial posts, and she'd even confess that they all made her cry because of that, and almost everyone knows that she's not a big crier. if there was anyone at the memorial that she knew, who was still upset, she'd go up to them, give them a big hug, and tell them something to hopefully bring some comfort to them.

lorin was very thankful that she didn't see them putting people she loved into body bags and ambulances - but thinking it was still real she took off running to the hospital- calling to tell her nana what was going on. nana made her go back to the dorms, because she didn't want her going to the hospital alone. nana and aunt gen came to get her and took her to the hospital for the tour and lorin cried. and cried. and cried. the only person she'd lost in her life so far was her grandfather- and they were taken to the same hospital he passed away in, so everything came rushing back.

once she realized/reconciled that it was a presentation, she was a little better about it. she didn't go to the trial, but she'd be at the memorial service, likely sitting with the zetas and pledges.

claudia did not do the hospital tour. seeing zack upset was enough to break her heart, so after the vigil, she mainly stayed with him. she headed to the delta house during the morning, and while she didn't attend the trial, she did her duties and reported the situation. depending on who was there, claudia probably sat with her sisters, pledges, close friends, some random dude who happened to have a space next to him, etc. she stared off a good bit while listening, unable to look directly at anyone for fear she'd bawl her eyes out. if anyone spoke to her, though, she'd straighten her back, clear her throat, and pull herself together.

Is' never went near anything last night since he was so worked up. All he had to do was grab updates from Logan and be fine with it but he remained at the Sig house wandering out outside with the dog just to clear his head. I think the entire idea was too much to handle on top of stuff he had been dealing with. This morning/afternoon he did finally muster up the courage to catch what was already posted online of the demonstration and couldn't believe how it was pulled off and what looked so real in the simulation.

He would have it together as much as he could to attend the memorial service. Of course there with his brothers since he felt it was the proper thing to do. He wouldn't care that he missed out a baseball game since this seemed to be far more important. If anything, he would appear numb to it all but offered support for anyone that was around and needed it more than he did. Hugs and some prayers just to uplift spirits that were affected by it.

Thursday morning, Isolde was excused from her classes to get ready for all of this. She was pretty excited, threw on black clothes, black heels, and set it all off with one of those black robes from a Scream halloween outfit without the Scream mask. She grabbed her four people: Sol, Lolly, Stev, and Elizabeth, and brought them back to where they were supposed to be. She did a pretty good job ignoring the students who seemed to look at her funny and relaxed once she got to her destination.

Once it was time for the demonstration to start, Izzie sat with the other reapers and watched, and at first was really amazed at how real it looked. After all the broadcasts and the student responses started to come out, she started to lose it just a little, she cried a bit but ultimately remembered that it wasn't real so she got herself together. Facebook and her iPhone were turned off after listening and reading voicemails, texts, and statuses from everyone about the incident. She got herself ready to accompany the DOAs to the Morgue, where she sat for a long time so if anyone came by the Morgue, they would have noticed her there although not by face because she had her hood on and she wouldn't have spoken. Later that evening, she posted herself up in the hospital rooms of those being "taken off" life support and wandered the halls for a little bit as well.

That night, everyone involved in the demonstration probably had a chance to share their reasons for doing this, especially because of some angry responses from Facebook and other sources. Izzie shared multiple times about how, similarly to Riqy, she had allowed an intoxicated driver to drive her home one night and probably said a few other things to make the "victims" feel a little bit better about hurting their loved ones. Friday morning after breakfast with everyone, she would go back to watch the trial online and see everything going on. Izzie wouldn't be quite ready to run back to everything yet and hang back for an hour or so, but once she's safely back on campus, she'd let everyone know and probably stay in her room for the night.

sol ate breakfast with everyone, though she might not have eaten all of it! she really didn't sleep well the night before and it's going to be obvious. she's physically and emotional drained and quiet. she watched the trial online until she had to get ready to go back to campus. at the memorial service, she didn't stand up and say anything. mostly, because she can't speak publicly to a crowd of that magnitude. she just stayed quiet and let the tears flow.

after the service, she would've apologized to everyone and anyone who she knew was affected by this and would say they learned something from it. if anyone decided to get pissy with her, she would turn and walk away, because she wouldn't be up for confrontation. she'd also more than likely just go back to her room and chill.

That thursday morning, Quin was pretty cool and nonchalant about being taken away by the reaper. He tried to avoid questions that some random people in the cafeteria started asking. I think after the fact when it was time to get into the role, get made up to look like an accident victim, it didn't do much. He still was pretty cool about it. I think actually being on the scene and being hauled out the wreckage like it was the real thing started to toy with him a bit. He was quiet about things for the most part up until after the demo. Possibly like the rest he logged in fb through his phone to check stuff out. It really put him in a place where he really wanted to respond. I think at some points after the fact, he was angry, then sad, and guilty over all.

Being at the hospital finally put him in a place that he wasn't able to feel indifferent about the entire situation. Him being in on a stretcher like he was really unconscious probably affected him more than seeing the reactions online from earlier. The only high point was being rolled around in a wheelchair by Isolde.

He tried to keep away from the newscast and everything else to avoid the reactions by falling into working on his macbook. That didn't last long really. He tried to be open about it just to relate to what others were going through?

Friday morning Quin was having breakfast and tried to open up with everyone who was down there when he was. I think at that point he was going through a lot of mixed emotions and was missing home more than he ever did. He asked everyone how they were hanging in there before getting himself ready to face the music so to speak. When it was time for the memorial service he was standing up there with the rest. I think Quin would have said some words since he felt compelled to do so. He had to speak out about the students reasoning for it and his own personal reason why he participated. He'll be backing up the others since he kind feels a link between them.

I think after the service, he would of went about his own way just to recollect himself and then seek out someone from Pike so he could personally talk to them and then anyone else who may have needed it. I'm not sure how I want him to react accordingly after things are done but he'll be in some funk for awhile because he has someone on his mind that he couldn't reach out to like he would have wanted to.

Frankie had gone into this with good ideals and he was excited about it but as soon as the blow ups happen he sobered up and pretty much did his best to be a rock if anyone needed it. He was there with hugs and reruns of Shrek for the 48 hours they were gone.

At the memorial, once he came out he would've been quiet, sort of hunched in on himself although as soon as he was free he would've gone and hugged everyone he could fine, initially, including his sigma brothers so deal with it, although he needed to leave almost asap.

i didn't have a chance to post in the other discussion posts since i was busy with everything else, but karime had gone to everything. she was already on campus for class, and had walked over to the demonstration, thinking that it was a pep rally. i think she only stay for a few minutes to watch, but once they started pulling people from the cars, she rushed back to the dorms. she sat in the commons and watched the rest of everything on TV because in her mind, she figured that watching it that way would make it feel more like a TV show or a movie than real life. at some point, she went over to skylaar's apartment, baked some goodies to take down to the vigil to pass out to people to eat for comfort food.

at the vigil, karime walked around and gave hugs to anyone that she knew, or talked to anyone who was crying or upset. i don't think she'd up to to take the tour until towards the end of the whole thing. once she walked past ellie's room, she'd cry a little bit (but not full on sob). she would try to be brave and go up to the morgue, she she hung out towards the back because death is something she hasn't really had to deal with, yet.

she would've gotten all of the kkg sisters and pledges (or at least anyone who was willing to go) and attend the memorial service. she'd pay close attention to all of the speeches, and once she saw everyone come out on stage, she'd be relieved and happy to see that everyone was okay. she stuck around for a little while to talk to people and offer hugs before she went back to the dorms to clean and pack before leaving for florida on sunday.

Stevie arrived at the scene of the crash shortly after it happened. She watched them zip Riqy, Sol, and Frankie into body bags. She definitely showed how upset she was by the whole thing. She clung to Tajo most of the day before leaving. She realized it wasn't real by this point and had sent out text messages to everyone to make sure more people she knew weren't involved. She decided to turn a day of horror into one she could look back and enjoy. She got ice cream and went home for a cuddle session with Cam.

This morning she was happy she didn't do the hospital tour or the vigil. Had they been real she would have been there, no doubt about it, but she didn't want to participate in anything too crazy. She was there for the memorial, mostly to show support for the deltas and her other friends that were there. She made it a point to seek out Tajo, find out if he was okay and give him hugs before taking her place with Claudia, Aly, and the other girls. She did her best to keep herself together and didn't dissolve into sobs, but she definitely did let a few tears fall just because the vibe in the room got to her.

She didn't agree with the way people were brought to the site and she wasn't really happy with the way it affected the people around her, but she didn't want to crack the unified front that the Deltas were putting on.

During the mock accident itself, Ellie was feeling nervous and excited all at the same time. This was the first time she had participated in something like this, though she had seen one before, so she wasn't exactly sure what was in store for her. She's been preparing for it for a month, all in secrecy, so now that everything was coming together she was a big bundle of nerves. She could hear all of the commotion going on around her and she had to remember not to react to it or to look around. It wasn't until they started to use the jaws of life on the car she was in that everything started to sink into her and start to really feel real. Being pulled out of the car and placed on the backboard and having the paramedics act like they were working on her and starting rescue breathing...she almost did start to hyperventilate.

Being in the "hospital" was the worst part for her. She could hear her parents, the conversation about taking her off of life support, and all the emotion from everyone around her. It was all she could do not to say something or give some sign of life. Hearing her roomie and her brother and her parents bothered her more than she thought it would. Going into this, she honestly thought nobody would give any of it a second thought. They'd look at it, see that it was fake, and go about their daily lives. To listen to people she cared about REALLY getting emotional was more than she could really handle.

After everything was done and she and the other victims were taken back to the hotel room, she got in the shower and started crying as she washed all of the blood and makeup off of herself. Once she was showered, she went and used her phone to browse through facebook and the journals...it was the first time she was able to see everyone's reactions. Seeing how mad people were at her and the others that took part in the mock crash, she started to feel sick and honestly didn't want to come back to campus. She thought a lot of it was a bit overly dramatic and people getting their panties in a knot over nothing, but to see the genuine panic from some people brought her to tears. The whole time she was getting ready for this event, she thought everyone was going to realize it was fake, so the panic and the anger really freaked her out. After seeing everyone's reactions she kept to herself for the rest of the night, curled up in a ball in her bed, crying. She never regretted her choice to participate in the event, and still doesn't, but she was scared to death that everyone was going to hate her because of it.

During the memorial, when the victims came out onto stage, Ellie wouldn't have taken part in the sharing a few words. She'd have just sat very quietly in her seat, looking extremely pale, and staring down at the floor. She's not sorry about what she did, she's just sorry that so many people took it so personally, and she was afraid to face any of them yet...mostly going back to that fear that if she looked up she'd see glares of hatred coming from everyone.

Following the memorial service, she would have avoided most everyone, except one person. Her brother would have been sitting with her parents and she went straight for them/him. As soon as she saw Michael, she'd have become an emotional wreck. Ellie would have thrown herself at him, sobbing and clinging to him, and begging him to forgive her and not to hate her. It will be the only time she will apologize or ask for forgiveness for taking part in the whole scenario.
