Early this morning, several students from different organizations on campus began to distribute flyers everywhere. Some flyers will be passed out to individuals, some will be tacked onto announcement boards, and stacks will be left in various locations such as the bookstore, library, cafeteria, etc. Starting at 8:15am this morning, students were escorted by a reaper from various locations on campus. They were taking to an undisclosed location where they were transformed to look as if they were just involved in a horrible car accident. Meanwhile, at the Smith Center parking lot, volunteers have been working hard to recreate the scene of the "car accident" by bringing in impounded cars, tarp, and having emergency response vehicles parked on the other side of the Smith Center. Temporary fences have been set up around the vicinity to conceal the scene until they are removed at 1:50pm. Temporary bleachers were also set up in a semi-circle around the scene for people to come and watch the demonstration.
At approximately 1:45pm, campus police drove around campus with sirens and lights on in 15 second intervals for the next 15 minutes. If anyone were to ask campus police officer what was going on, they would inform them of an "emergency" that happened at the Smith Center or suggest to the student to go to the Smith Center. During that time, the victims got into place and had tarps over their vehicles as students were allowed to enter and were seated. 2pm, tarps were removed showing victims in and on cars that have been considered junk and have been made to look like it was a real crash. That's when sirens will begin to go off from a fire truck, a squad car, a motorcycle unit and three ambulances (1 Chapel Hill ambulance and 2 ambulances from a private company) as they drive up to the "scene" and start working as if it were responding to an actual car accident. Three people will be pronounced dead at the scene and were placed in actual body bags and were transported in a coroners van to another fenced off area where they waited for the other participants and to watch what was going down on the other side of the fence. The jaws of life were used for one car and soon all victims were loaded up in ambulances and were taken away.
Because some people may not be able to make it to the Smith Center to see everything play out, there will be a live broadcast (on TV and online) of the scene thanks to STV, and there will also be "breaking news reports" made on WXYC. There will be an actual broadcast made on WXYC around 3:30pm EST! Be sure to look out for that later today!
