GROUP THREADS (ACCIDENT/VIGIL/HOSPITAL)

On January 27, 2010, an e-mail from Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs was sent out to every student, faculty, and staff at the UNC Campus. There was a small buzz going around, as students tried to guess what exactly the school had planned. Some students chose to delete the e-mails from their inbox, while some would try to do some research to figure out what was going on, while a handful of students who took great interest decided to submit applications to see how they could be a participate.

Over the course of a month, staff and students worked hard to contact the local police department, campus police, Chapel Hill police department, local hospital, and the on-campus health center to recruit public service and health care professionals to assist them with the demonstration. The students who were to play the victims had spent time doing their own research in terms of researching injuries, figuring out where they would be picked up by the reapers, and packing overnight bags. The most challenging thing that they were faced with was writing their own obituaries or contacting their parents to see if they were willing to participate. And, most importantly, the students had to remember to remain tight lipped about the parts that they were going to play in the scenario.

THE SCENE: SMITH CENTER PARKING LOT – THE ACCIDENT

Early, March 3, 2011, everything seemed to run smoothly as people worked together to bring the impounded vehicles that would be used for the accident on campus, set up bleachers, and pass out flyers. Throughout the morning, three reapers were seen in various parts of the campus, escorting students from classrooms, cafeteria, dorms, student union, library, among other places and were quietly taken to an undisclosed location. Once there, the students were treated to a brunch and were able to discuss their experiences thus far before volunteers from the theater department began to apply stage make-up to all of the victims. Before two o’clock, the victims were escorted to the Smith Center parking lot where they had situated themselves in the different vehicles. At two o’clock sharp, the temporary fences were removed and large tarp that was used to conceal the accident were removed for all to see. Emergency response vehicles drove up to the scene with their sirens the police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, went to work with removing bodies of the deceased and placing them into body bags and transporting those who were seriously injured into ambulances where they would be transferred to the nearby “hospital.” Throughout the demonstration, additional flyers will be passed out, sent out in e-mails, or posted online stating that the victims involved in the car accident will be transported to the on-campus health center, which is being used as the hospital for the demonstration, and a candlelight vigil and hospital visitation hours will be held there from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

[OOC DISCLAIMER] A player in ~hillies was kind enough to donate pictures from actual 15 Minutes scenes that were done at other schools. These pictures ARE NOT REAL. Although they are graphic due do the stage make-up used, we using them as visual aid for the entire set up! Pictures: A, B, and C.

THE SCENE: OUTSIDE THE CAMPUS HEALTH CENTER – CANDLELIGHT VIGIL

Outside the "Hospital" there is a candlelight vigil held as people come and go during visiting hours. There will be electric candles on hand and students will stand around as if it were a real candlelight vigil. Students from different clubs were passing out said candles as well as tissues. Counselors from the Counseling Department were on hand to speak with students who need it. This is the time where friends, teammates, clubs, sororities or fraternities unite and stand together as they remember their loved ones.

THE SCENE: CAMPUS HEALTH CENTER – THE HOSPITAL/MORGUE
[info]15mins

After normal business hours at the health center were over, students, nurses, and doctors worked together to transform the health center into a hospital. Chairs were arranged in the lobby to make it look like a hospital waiting room. There are a total of 7 examination rooms that will be transformed to look like hospital rooms that will have nurses walking in and out as they check on the patients and checking their vitals on monitors that were donated from a private company. In the waiting room, there will be one reaper sitting in one of the chairs, casually flipping through a magazine and occasionally checking their watch before they have to go and do their “job.” Two nurses will also be in the waiting room, taking groups of 10 through the health center where students will have a chance to look through the doors and windows at the victims as they are treated for their injuries, fight for their life, or are removed off of life support from loved ones. A sheet of paper will be taped to each door that’ll have the student’s name, information, a list of their injuries, and prognosis. After one group walks through the health center, the other group will have their turn to go through the health center to maintain a smooth flow of traffic. The victims who will be in hospital rooms are: Nate Kreiter, Joaquin Souza, Gabrielle Westin, Elizabeth “EJ” Martin, Stev Rogers, Bialy Sigmand, and Holly Heartford.

After walking through the health center, the nurse with the group will stop and inform everyone that the next part of the tour involves taking them to the “morgue,” which is a larger conference room located on the second floor of the health center. People will have the option to continue on to the morgue, or to leave the health center depending on their level of comfort at the time. For those who wish to continue on to the morgue, the group will be escorted upstairs to the morgue. The conference room being used as the morgue has been completely cleared out, except for three examination tables that are in the center of the room and a desk that has various medical tools spread across it. There will be one doctor inside of the morgue who will be examining the bodies as well as a reaper who will be sitting in the corner of the morgue, sipping on a “beer.” The deceased people will be lying on each table with a white blanket draped over them, but folded down so they can be seen from their faces to shoulders. On the window, there will be three “autopsy reports” taped up listing each victim’s name, information, and the injuries they sustained which resulting in their death. The victims who will be in the morgue are: Riquel Torres, Soledad Vasquez, and Frankie Smith.

The entire day had been an extremely trying experience for Isolde. She knew what she was getting into in being involved in this kind of thing and up until the day of it, she was excited to be able to spread this message. However, sitting in the hotel room with the 'crash victims' as Sol, Frankie, Stev, people she had been getting acquainted with over the past few weeks of organizing this event, was starting to get to her. Watching Sol leave the room and come back vibrantly, albeit with intricate stage make up caused Izzie to cry a little, and by the time she was asked to get up and go to the morgue and 'be stationary, please,' her eyes were red and hollow from the absolute realism of this event. It could have been real, and that was the point. Her get up for the day was all black, as she should have been portraying death. Leading her friends to the hospital earlier that day required all of her energy to not cry along the way as she was a very emotional person.

Sitting in the morgue before any of the groups had come through or any nurses dropped by, she sat in the corner of the room with a glass of root beer. The fact that she was supposed to appear calm, cool, serene at the least was her issue. Izzie had looked at herself in the mirror, straightened the long black robes she had bought for the occasion and sat with the hood pulled over her face as she eyed the chair in the corner of the morgue. Sol, Riqy, and Frankie were on the table near her and even though ten minutes before they had all been talking to her, the silence of the room was starting to get to her. She took a sip out of her cup and wiped the tears clinging to her eyelashes before taking a deep breath and putting on a stone face, although no one would be able to know she was sitting there. As soon as the groups started to come through, Izzie leaned back in her chair, crossed her legs, and calmed the shaking in her hands long enough to take a sip out of her drink. Nothing would prepare her for the reactions to come.
